a christmas miracle

I was born in December
the arse end of a winter
harder than anyone could remember
so much snow
the drifts piled higher than Eros’ bow
Piccadilly Circus
the midwife late
but actually superfluous
I was already sprawling, bawling by the hearth
an icicle shot through my furious heart
